Rain, Rain Go Away, Come Again Another Day

I apologise to the people of New York as the weather has been somewhat dismal today and I feel solely responsible. I think the I bought the rain with me and in true British fashion once it started it didn’t stop.

On the plus side, this morning I discovered the most amazing supermarket ever! Its called Fairway and it just downstairs from the apartment. I went in to buy some porridge oats (my cereal of choice), but got so mesmerised and excited by all the unusual foods and strange brands that oats were suddenly the last thing on my mind. I ended up coming out with  a whole load of random stuff that I didn't know even existed. Needless to say I will have to make a second visit to get the oats.

Jam anyone?

I've had another busy day at the store. I can tell its going to be a steep learning curve but I'm up for the challenge and already excited about all the new things I'll be learning in each avenue of the business.

Here's me toting a bag hot out of the workshop. I'm proud to say that I played my own small part in creating this by painting the edges of the leather components and staining them with oil.

Before I go off the the land of nod let me tell you what I'm doing tomorrow...tomorrow I'm going over the bridge to Mahattan!!  :)

Firsts

Although I’ve only been here for 3 days I’ve already experienced a few firsts, (some more worthy than others):

The first time I’ve heard someone other than Will.i.am use the ‘dope’ in an actual sentence (I nearly burst out laughing!).

The first time I’ve changed a nappy! And it wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. (If you were wondering, it was a number 1!).

The first time I’ve burped a baby. (Yes, I did end up with milky dribble all over me!).

The first time I’ve heard the word ‘Slumber-rific’, (used in reference to baby Eva chilling out in her cradle.).

That’s the exciting thing about travel and saying yes to new things, you never know where its going lead you and who’ll you’ll meet along the way.

A little bit of England in my New York bedroom...

Good Morning,

I've just woken up, ready for my second day in the Big Apple! My friend’s apartment is absolutely stunning! It over looks the water and is practically face to face with the statue of liberty. I really do feel like a little English girl in this big amazing city; but in a good way. Everything is so new and exciting to me, it’s hard to take in my surroundings all at once because there is so much to see.

My new neighbour.
Yesterday was a super busy day; I went with my friend to a hat designer in the morning to pick up some new stock for her shop (sorry, I mean store), then after spending the day in the store we had a quick shower, change of clothes and went back out to a 40th Birthday party which was held at a funky new restaurant in Green Point. Oh, I forgot to mention that the day was interspersed by the frequent holding of, feeding of and burping of my latest and youngest friend, 6 week old baby Eva.

I've Arrived in New York!

Just off to bed after my first full day in New York. Had a fab, jammed packed day; lots of new sights, sounds and smells. I've met lots of new people too but too tired now (its 1.30am!) so will get back to you in the morrow.

Today is the day - only 71/2hrs til take off!

I realise that I have neglected to tell you about my day yesterday, so let me tell you about it while I sit here eating my porridge out of my favourite Emma Bridgewater bowls. (They’ll have porridge in New York right?)

So, the morning started off in a rather dull fashion as I ended up spending several hours backing up my computer. I’m usually not this sensible but I am waiting to upgrade my operating system, (I hope this is the right terminology because I don’t really know what I’m talking about), anyway the geeky guy, sorry I mean ‘genius’, at the apple store heavily advised that I back everything up before installing this upgrade thingy. You should have seen the look on his face when I said I’d never backed up before, it was like I’d committed murder! After backing up as many photos and documents as I felt necessary (yes, I did get rather bored), I met up with one on my old school friends for lunch. We went to this gorgeous little Café on only a few minutes away from my flat called The Primrose café and it was lovely. Despite being so close, and somewhere that I pass pretty much everyday, I had never actually eaten there before which totally ridiculous and even more so now that I’ve only just appreciated the day before my travels! Oh well, maybe I’ll head there for some sort of ‘Welcome Back’ gathering. My friend and I have known each other since we were about 10 years old and it’s so lovely that we’ve both ended up in Bristol.

My next afternoon appointment was slightly less glamorous than luncheon – I had a doctor’s appointment. I hate going to the doctors, its not because I’m scared or shy, it’s the bloody wait before hand. The doctors never seem to be running on time so I always end up sitting around in the waiting room picking up everyone else’s germs. Anyway back to my aliment – I have a swollen toe. It’s been this way for a couple of months now and its become agitated over the last couple of days, so I thought it best to get it checked out. I know what some of you may be thinking, as both my friend and my boyfriend thought the same – gout. Incidentally this was my first question to the doctor to put my mind at rest (anyway, isn’t this something that only 50 year old, overweight men suffer from?!). After a bit of prodding and bending of my toes the doctor confirmed I was gout free. Hurrah! However she couldn’t confirm what I actually did have wrong with my toe hence prescribing me a rather diplomatic prescription of ibuprofen gel and antibiotics ‘in case it gets worse’.

Later on, in the early evening, my friend popped by after work with a little farewell gift. When I say little, it was little in size but huge in thoughtfulness and generosity. It was a beautiful, amber coloured Monica Vinader ring. I’ve only recently stumbled across MV but absolutely love the design, colours and shapes of her jewellery and this ring is the piece of my collection.

I’m afraid I must conclude here as my friend will momentarily be arriving to pick me up to take me to the airport and I am still in my dressing gown. I have finished my porridge though!

1 day and 17hrs hours to go…

So, today has been a day of continued packing and further farewells. Although I live in a city, my local patch has more of a village feel to it; so today I said my goodbyes to my version of ‘the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker’ - my version being: the grocer, the cobbler and the cocktail maker!

The day was punctuated at noon where I had lunch with a former colleague, and personal friend. When I say lunch, she had a bowl of lucky charms (a very apt cereal choice considering my imminent destination) and I had a Gin & Tonic! What can I say, this brief period of not working has led me to indulge in a lunchtime alcoholic beverage without the slightest feeling of guilt. My friend bought me a couple of farewell gifts, one of them being ‘The Not For Tourist (NFT) guide to Brooklyn’ – tonight’s bedtime reading!
